Step 4: Calories & Supplements

Any calorie, vitamin, or mineral deficits from your forage ration can be made up from limited ingredient feeds, commercial feeds, and supplements.

Commercial feeds already have a vitamin/mineral mix added to balance most forage rations. If you feed less then the recommended feeding rate, you will need to add a vitamin/mineral supplement to the ration.

Limited ingredient products do not have a vitamin/mineral mix added. You will need to add a vitamin/mineral mix to balance your forage ration when feeding these products.

You also need to provide salt and or electrolytes to your horse regardless of the feed provided. Some good salt/electrolyte products are: Redmond Agriculture, Redmond Equine, Smartpak, Uckele.
