Equine-Assisted Activities & Therapies

Equine-Assisted activities include therapeutic riding, therapeutic driving, interactive vaulting, and equine-assisted learning (EAL). These activities have therapeutic value, but are not led by a licensed therapist. Equine-assisted activities are designed to meet a client’s therapeutic goals (social engagement, grip strength, etc.) by using riding, driving, vaulting, or EAL.

Equine therapy includes equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) and hippotherapy. Equine therapy is led by a licensed therapist and is considered therapy. EAP must be led by a licensed mental health practitioner (social worker, marriage/family/addiction counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist). Hippotherapy must be provided by an occupation therapist, physical therapist, or speech therapist.
